Business Ethics
CEMS Blocked Seminar, 6 ECTSs
August 29th - September 2nd, 2005
Helsinki School of Economics (HSE)
Lecture Hall A-201

Syllabus
Coordinator: Kristina Rolin, Ph.D., Academy of Finland Senior Research Fellow, HSE
The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of why moral reasons are an integral part of decision making in today’s economy. We will seek to understand the limits of models which conceptualize economic agents as self-interest-maximizing beings. We will also compare different moral theories in order to understand what qualifies as rational grounds in evaluating the moral value of our actions and institutions. Philosophical moral theories will be compared to Catholic Christian teaching of business ethics. In addition, we will discuss the role of trust in building competitive economies as well as ethical issues in finance. The stakeholder theory is introduced to provide an understanding of the social responsibility of the firm in global economy.
